6 August, from the crew dude

Hi all!

Well, I collected Eric from around 60 k's away this time, so I had very much further to go.  He was also carrying one of those live tracker devices, and we could tell that he was struggling and getting lower.  Soon the retrieval message came through.

This time he was right alongside a main road just before a big town.  So I entered the name of that town into the VW's nav system - and it came up with three alternatives.  First one would send me around 300 k's away, the second was even worse, and the third seemed to be the right one, and gave me around 75 k's by road.  A nav system like that is a great idea.

Got there eventually.  Driving in Poland is slow, the open road speed limit is 90 klicks but if you're towing a trailer it's 80.  And then all the towns are 50, and there are lots of those.  And nearly all the riads are single-lane, and there are also lots of tractors using those roads!

The paddock he landed in was soft.  Real soft.  Couldn't get the car in there even without a trailer.  So we had to manhandle the glider to the trailer, which I got onto a farmhouse entrance road.  Fortunately the local farmer helped, with a tractor and rope, and we managed to tow the glider across the field at walking pace, the farmer seemed to know what was required.  We just about had a great conversation in sign language, and a good giggle.  And a passing German couple who had some English as well as Polish helped out too.

Then had to back the trailer out onto the main road.  Between strams of cars.  Eventually it was done and we headed off back home.

Oh, and both of us forgot to take pictures of the outlanding!

Today's a big task - just under 4 hrs AAT.  There's some cirrus around but it's hotter than yesterday.  I missed the briefing so don't know what the weather will do but we'll see what happens I guess.

Stay tuned!
